Airplanes
So you want to get into Radio Control Aircraft!
Where do I start?
What do I need?
How much will it cost?
Where can I fly?
These are some of the questions you most likely have running through your mind! I will not try to answer these questions as much as try to show some options and recommendations that are more my opinion than of fact.
So Where do I start? First off what part of the hobby are you most interested in? Is it building or just flying. Maybe the history of aviation or a certain erra captures your imagination. If you just want to fly an aircraft then today there are many options you can take. However when you are just starting out choosing the right aircraft for the job is more important than the look or performance of the aircraft. Although performance is a vital concern of a first aircraft. There are many good trainers available in what is called RTF or "Ready To Fly" form. They may not be the prettiest or most true to form models but they fly well and have characteristics that should favor your success in flying.
To Start off I recommend locating your local flying field or better yet a few. Most areas have at least one but normally 2 or more flying site that are AMA sanctioned. This is not the American Medical Association, No we are talking about the Acadamy of Model Aeronautics. This organization has been around for over 75 Years and they are the voice of model Aeronautics. I have been a member for over 40 years and fortunatly never needed any direct services, mainly insurance. The cost of membership has gone up over the years but I beleive is still very reasonable. Visit https://www.modelaircraft.org/ for information and to join. Price has gone up again but if you consider the cost of other pastimes and hobbies it is not expensive. After all if you go out for a round of golf with some friends you can expect to spend at least $100. that is for one day. AMA at this time in 2023 is $85. Club dues will ussually be from about the same to about $250 or so. But, that is for one Year! I will not even get into full scale Flying!
Now Now what else do I need?
A plane to start. Again go back to the club instructors. Ask for their recommendations as they will be teaching you.
